Its name comes from Greek language, a word Pharos, a Greek name for the Island and the ancient town situated on the location where the present town Stari grad is now (in XIII century City of Hvar took over its name and the title of Island`s center).

The glory and the wealth Hvar gained in the Middle Ages as one of the major ports of Venetian Empire. Nowadays, it is a tourist center and the most favorable tourist destination on Dalmatian Riviera, a small town of kind and smiling inhabitants devoted to tourism.

History of Hvar is measured by millennia. Its wealth is a result of different circumstances and advantages of Hvar. Among the most important is, off course, is the nautic position of the Port of Hvar. Namely, ever since the beginning of sailing , the Island of Hvar was in the middle of longways and crossways of sailing routes in the Adriatic Sea. The Port itself, protected by nearby tiny islands and naturally perfectly shaped, served as a sea haven from baleful winds.

Geographic position…
City of Hvar is located in the small bay on the southwest end of Island of Hvar. It is southward and the neighboring towns Stari Grad and Jelsa are westward and northward, respectfully. Further south from the City Port are Pakleni Islands.
You will experience romantic moments using any kind of vessel to get to the Island. And when you see it the joy begins and you realize it was worthwhile coming.

Climate…

Annual average of sunny hours is 2.726 and the maximum was 3.053 in 2003. The sunniest day in year is July 18th, with average 12 hours, 27 minutes and 36 seconds. The average monthly air temperature from June to September exceeds 20°C, only two months (January and February) have the average temperature below 10°C.

Average monthly sea temperature , from June to October is well over 27°C. Due to this mild Mediterranean climate the Island of Hvar is an ideal destination for pre and post tourist season when air and the sea temperatures are ideal for holidays.

The summer heat is most commonly chilled by mild wind – Maestral coming from the northwest. Jugo wind mainly brings bad weather and showers, while Bura wind brings cooly clear weather.

Hvar summers are long and hot, autumns are pleasant and winters are mild and short.

It is a real unique opportunity to experience snow on Hvar, once in ten years in average, and it is always an attraction.
